The Experience Journeys set of resources are an exciting way to explore Christian festivals. Visitors are invited to travel around stations set up in the church building or outdoor space and have opportunities to reflect through multi-sensory activities on parts of the festival in focus. Whilst the Experience Journeys were originally designed to be hosted by a church community for their local primary schools, churches often choose to keep the displays in place and open the church during the days following schools visits, so that their own members or external visitors can experience the journey. The journeys can also be held in other locations, such as halls or classrooms. The Diocese of Bath and Wells Go Team have been working with Send a Cow and Movement on an Advent resource for young people that not only journeys through the account of the birth of Jesus found in Luke’s gospel, but gives a global perspective too. The collaboration has produced five short videos (one for each week of Advent plus one for Christmas Day featuring Bishop Ruth), four youth group session outlines and an Advent social media campaign complete with daily challenges: all based around the themes of Hope, Joy, Peace and Love. Each week of Advent will begin with a two-minute video presented by Sam Davis and Emily Hatton, both part of the Movement family, and featuring Send a Cow project workers in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Zambia reading part of the Christmas story from the Good News translation of the Bible.

The Free Churches Group and Methodist Schools are delighted to be able to offer these resources free of charge to teachers. They have been written and developed by Lat Blaylock from RE Today Services, and a team of teacher-volunteers from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds has provided valuable contributions. In our society it is no longer sufficient to be non-racist, but we need to be equipped to be anti-racist. Many members of the Free Churches Group are engaged in their own conversations about how to combat the inequalities in our society. These resources are a tangible expression of that concern and a contribution to engage with the issues in the public square.

Billions of people take part in religious festivals every year, but we rarely talk about the environmental impact of these celebrations. Can you find new ways to make religious festival more eco-friendly? Here’s what do: Form a group of 2-5 people Choose a religious festival Explore how your chosen festival could be made more eco-friendly Present your ideas in a format of your choice (art, cartoon, film, animation etc.) Tip: Think about different aspects of religious festivals, such as food, travel, objects (gifts, candles, confetti, lanterns…). How do these aspects impact the environment? For example, some religious festivals involve lighting candles. Most candles contain paraffin which releases harmful chemicals. An alternative could be to use soy wax candles. There may be some elements of festivals that cannot be changed for religious reasons so please aware of this in your suggestions. However, you may come up with ideas which could make a big difference to our planet, so put your thinking caps on and get creative!
