20th April 2020
20 April 2020
Greetings to you from sunny Shropshire.
I hope that the rather unusual (for us) celebrations of Easter engendered a sense of hope for you, as they did for me.
Although unusual to be alone in individual contemplation and celebrations, it reminded me that the first disciples had that experience. They were afraid, unsure of whom to trust and isolated …. and many of them doubted the revelation of the resurrection at first. Even when Jesus appeared to them they found it hard to grasp:
‘Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself!”’
I have also been struck by the busyness of so many in the past weeks of lockdown: clearing out attics, garages, rooms and cupboards… and in my case the garden! All very worthy and laudable. But then what? It is so easy to get caught up in distraction – anything to avoid facing the reality of being enclosed with ourselves…. Please do not misunderstand me: We need structure and positive action to create some kind of routine and bring order out of potential chaos.
However, I wonder how many are fearful of facing the reality of who they are, who they can become and how they can find meaning and purpose? I believe that your role as chaplain, is even more important now than ever. Finding ways of reaching out to those within the communities to which you have been called is a challenge, as is your isolation at this time.
So, I would like to invite you to join me for some events, just for you!
First of all, from this Friday (24th April) and every Friday for the foreseeable future, I will be hosting a ‘coffee and cake’ hour on Zoom, for all chaplains in schools and colleges. Come and join me and others, (sorry you will need to bring your own coffee and cake!) and let’s have a chat about what’s happening with you, your community/ies and the wider world. Invitation:
Topic: Coffee and Cake
Time: Apr 24, 2020 04:00 PM
Join Zoom Meeting
Meeting ID: 829 0639 4114
Secondly, alongside the Methodists, The Free Churches Group, the Church of England, Chaplaincy Central and St Peter’s/Saltley Trust we are putting together some Zoom ‘webinars’ to explore ways in which we can support each other and develop our creativity in reaching into our communities. The first one will be recorded on Zoom within the next 10 days and we will focus on ‘Making sense of the Maelstrom’. We will send out information about accessing these as soon as possible.
Finally, we are looking to appoint a Communications Consultant in the next few weeks. If you receive this information several times please forgive us! Advert attached. Thank you 😊
God bless you richly as the new terms begin and you seek our Father for his wisdom and guidance and see some of you on Friday 😊
